05/06 Season
Birmingham Internationl vs Milton Keynes
Date: Saturday 22nd October 2005
Score: 3-1 Loss (22-25 25-15 25-16 25-16)

The bogey team strikes again...
MK has a history of losing badly to Birmingham when playing at their home venue...Saturday was no different. Despite a strong start from MK, taking the first set 22-25, it wasn't good enough as the home side proved more powerful than a relatively weak MK.

With a full squad in attendance, Coach Smith was able to chop and change the line up effectively throughout the match, but it wasn't enough on the day. The starting 6 for the match held their nerve in a tough first set to take a 1-0 lead. However, it went downhill from this point on. It was a combination of Birmingham's power and MK's lack of confidence at the net that contributed to the decline.

Birmingham came out in the second set with all guns blazing. Despite some great backcourt pick-ups from libero Kev Smith and some hearty blocking, Birmingham pushed MK back on their heels, in more ways than one, to romp home to win the second set 25-15. Unfortunately, this ended up being the story of the match. Birmingham took the following two sets easily 25-16 each to win the match 3-1.

Despite the perceived scoreline thrashing, MK had periods of good volleyball in the match and have something to build on for future matches. It was clear that on the day, Birmingham deserved their win with the strength of their attack and overall good game play. MK have a lot of work to do, not least of all is improving the confidence in the attacking, but it's still early in the season.
